Communicating layoffs in this economical climate is a very difficult task. At Sageview, we recommend that management is thoroughly prepared to make the announcement and anticipate potential situations. First audit your policies and procedures as well as contracts, and performance appraisals of those employees who will be terminated. Make sure that you are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, commonly referred to as “plant closing laws.”

Coach your managers. Make sure they are well-versed in scripted responses for the day of the layoff and the days ahead. Empathize with your staff and preserve the dignity of those that are departing or faced with increased workloads and uncertainty about their own jobs. Teach your managers how to identify affected employees that may pose a safety or security threat and have a plan to deal with potential problems.

What have others found to be useful when communicating layoffs?
